about

Ben Roidl-Ward's debut album features six solo and chamber works written in the last 10 years by Liza Lim, Luis Fernando Amaya, Tania León, Mathew Arrellin, Tom Kelly, and José-Luis Hurtado. Each of these composers stretches the limits of the bassoon in their own way. Encompassing radical soundworlds from translucent dyads to violent, guttural multiphonic sonorities, the works on this album reimagine the sonic and expressive profile of the instrument.

Ben Roidl-Ward is the Solo Bassoonist of Ensemble Dal Niente, Principal Bassoonist of the Chicago Sinfonietta, and Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the University of Northern Iowa. He also holds positions as a Contemporary Leader for the Lucerne Festival and Second Bassoonist of the Illinois Symphony. Ben’s dedication to working with and advocating for composers of his generation has led him to commission and premiere numerous works featuring the bassoon with the goal of broadening the repertoire and expanding the possibilities of the instrument. He received a DMA from Northwestern University, where he studied with David McGill. His dissertation focused on the bassoon’s multiphonics and methods of notating them. Ben's previous teachers include Ben Kamins at Rice University, George Sakakeeny at the Oberlin Conservatory, and Francine Peterson in the Seattle area.
